The Problem of Not Knowing the “How”
Most people never chase their dreams because they can’t figure out how they will happen. They look at the mountain in front of them and give up before they take the first step. They convince themselves it’s impossible without connections, money, or the right background.
That was me at sixteen years old. I had no music connections. No ties to the entertainment industry. No roadmap showing me what to do next. But I had one clear goal that I couldn’t shake.
The Spark That Started It All
I was sixteen when I heard “On a Sunday Afternoon” by Lighter Shade of Brown. In that song, a DJ came on and introduced himself. He didn’t just back-announce the track like a radio host. He was part of the recording itself. That moment hit me hard.
I didn’t just like the song. Something inside me clicked. The moment that DJ’s voice came on, I knew I had to be that guy. My dream became crystal clear—I wanted to be on a record, introducing myself on a hit track that would blast from radios across the country.. It felt impossible, but the dream was real.
Setting the Goal That Defined My Path
I didn’t need to know the steps. The “how” wasn’t my responsibility. What mattered was the “what.” My goal was simple and clear—one day, I would be on a song just like that DJ.
That vision took over my thoughts. I carried it with me every single day. I pictured the moment in full detail. In my mind, I could already hear my voice on a record that hadn’t been made yet. I wasn’t chasing the opportunity. I was drawing it toward me.
The Breakthrough in 1996
Fast forward to 1996. I was nineteen years old when the opportunity arrived. Out of nowhere, I ended up on “AZ Side” by Nasty Boy Klick. It became a hit song. Just like that, the goal I had carried for years became reality.
I never forced it. There was no hustling my way into the studio. I didn’t scheme or beg to make it happen. The opportunity appeared because I had set the goal, kept it alive in my mind, and allowed the universe to bring it to life.
The Lesson: Focus on Belief, Not the “How”
That’s the power of focusing on one goal. Your job isn’t to worry about the process. Your job is to set the goal, believe in it, and keep it alive in your thoughts.
When you obsess over “how,” you open the door to doubt. You overthink, hesitate, and eventually quit. When you focus on belief, the “how” takes care of itself. Opportunities line up in ways you couldn’t design if you tried.
Living Out Goals Every Day
That wasn’t the last time this principle worked in my life. Every goal I’ve ever set has eventually happened. Some came quickly. Others took months or even years. But they came.
I’m still living out goals I set five years ago. I’m also living goals I set a few weeks ago. Every day I see proof that what you focus on expands. What you believe in, you attract.
That’s why I speak about goal setting to organizations, leaders, and individuals. The message is simple. The only way to accomplish a goal is by setting it, thinking about it regularly, and letting the “how” figure itself out.
The Strategy: Applying Goal Setting #6
Here’s how to use this in your life:
-
Set one specific goal. Don’t scatter your energy. Focus on one clear vision.
-
Think about it daily. Keep it alive in your mind until it feels real.
-
Don’t chase the “how.” Let opportunities show up in their own time.
-
Believe with persistence. Confidence attracts the right doors to open.
The moment you let go of controlling every detail, you make space for your goals to unfold.
Conclusion: Goal Setting #6 Is About Belief
Goal Setting #6 is proof that you don’t need to know the “how.” You only need to know the “what” and believe it’s possible.
At sixteen, I set a wild goal. At nineteen, it came true. That one focus changed my life and made me famous. The same principle can change your life too.
